Something must be done

Like all of you, we have been saddened by the awful events of this past week. We have watched the appalling tragedy unfold before our eyes on the television, torn between pity for those involved and anger that the authorities should have let the matter come this far.

For too long the signs have been ignored. The dogs in the street knew that the worst could happen if something was not done. It is a sad indictment of this nation that nobody lifted a finger.

But we must look now to the future, and try to put the past behind us. Kneejerk reactions are not the answer, and those who gripe at tough measures would do well to consider the alternatives.

This awful situation can only be alleviated through concerted action. That is why a solution must be found.
